Describe the ups and downs you have encountered during your inquiry.
I am encountering several obstacles during my research and am finding it difficult to locate information regarding the link between music lyrics and poetic devices. Though it is evident that poetry tools are a huge aspect of songwriting, there are little actual resources discussing this connection in detail and very few outline specific tools used. The only websites I have been able to find argue for the difference between the two and are very restrictive and limiting in information. However, after locating these rather basic resources, I realize I could utilize the basic information I have to analyze songs on my own. I narrowed down my question so I know exactly what information I am looking for, and this is helping me conduct more research. In general, the experience of doing my own in-depth analysis with albums has been very rewarding. In particular, Kendrick Lamar’s album DAMN. allows me to continue my own research and evaluation of poetic tools in songwriting.
The basic information I find includes tools such as dissonance, assonance, alliteration, consonance, and bending rhymes to create rhythm and flow. I am using many musical blogs and websites to gather various perspectives on poetry in songwriting. Since I have now garnered a basic understanding of tools seen in lyrics, I can easily locate and point out these tools in my analysis component.
